Amid rising economic challenges, Nigerian households are grappling with yet another surge in the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking ga
s. The price of LPG has soared to N1,500 per kilogram, placing an additional financial burden on citizens already stretched by inflation and fuel price hikes.
Experts attribute this increase primarily to Nigeria’s dependence on imported LPG. The Managing Director of NIPCO Plc, Suresh Kumar, explained that over 60% of the country’s LPG consumption is imported, and the depreciation of the naira has exacerbated the price rise. As a result, many households are forced to either ration their gas consumption or resort to alternative, less efficient cooking methods such as firewood and charcoal.
This price hike is the latest in a series of inflationary pressures faced by Nigerians, with the cost of refilling a 12.5 kg cylinder now exceeding N16,000.
