PDP Crisis Deepens as Damagum Camp and Anti-Wike Governors Prepare for Critical Meeting

The internal conflict within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is escalating, with a crucial meeting scheduled today among party governors amid rising tensions. The crisis intensified after acting National Chairman Umar Damagum suspended key party officials, including National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade. In response, Ajibade’s faction retaliated by suspending Damagum and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing leadership struggle.

At the heart of this turmoil are two factions vying for control. Damagum, supported by four governors—including Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and allies from Oyo, Adamawa, and Plateau states—represents a loyalist faction. In contrast, a rival group led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed aligns with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, garnering support from six other governors, including those from Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states.

The impending meeting is critical; failure to reach a consensus could deepen the divisions within the PDP and jeopardize its electoral prospects. Additionally, two governors remain neutral, adding further uncertainty to the party’s leadership dynamics.

As tensions mount, the outcome of today’s gathering could be pivotal in shaping the future of the PDP and determining whether it can maintain unity amid ongoing discord.
